Bethaven served in the civil War-Union side- Missouri 47th regiment, Company A-Missouri Infantry Volunteeers. He enlisted Aug 6, 1864 at Patterson, Wayne Co, Missouri for 6 months. He was discharged on March 18, 1865 at Benton Barracks, Missouri by reason of expiration of time of service. He is listed as being 36 at time of discharge, born in Warren Co, Tennessee, 5'7" tall, dark complexon, blue eyes, black hair. By occupation at time of enrollment, he was a farmer.

After the war he was prone to Coughs and colds and died at the age of 38 of typhoid and pneumonia. According to pension papers, his attending physician report is included along with a statement that Joel Meadors was also present when he died
